There has never been a better time to liven up your home!
The Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC) is a limited opportunity being offered by the federal government and ends on February 10, 2010. A 15% credit may be claimed on the portion of eligible expenditures exceeding $1,000, but not more than $10,000. The maximum tax credit is $1,350.
If you are planning to do the work yourself, the purchase of enduring plant material such as perennials, trees or shrubs qualifies under the program. However, do-it-yourself labour is not eligible for the tax credit.
The tax credit applies to any improvement or renovation of an enduring nature to your dwelling or the land on which the dwelling sits and can be done by you or a professional.
There is no application, simply file your claim next tax season. You are not required to send your receipts into Revenue Canada, but make sure you keep the receipts on file in case Revenue Canada audits your tax return.
